A summer day-out with kids – Places to go in Chennai

Summer! This is the time when those timeless memories are built. Planning to make those memories with your kids? From lake to beach, from amusement to adventure, from sports to recreation, Chennai has it all for you to hang out with your kids, no matter your budget. We have compiled a few kids’ day-out destinations in Chennai for the summer.

Guindy National Park

Being one of the smallest national parks in India and one among a very few national parks to be located in the city, Guindy national park also has the rarest vegetation type which is the tropical dry evergreen vegetation. The major part of the forest is a protected area which you could access after getting permission from the authorities, boasting for about 350 species of flora, 60 species of butterflies and spider, 14 species of mammals including black bucks, deers, civets, hyenas and even squirrels. The park remains as an ideal habitat of over 140 variety of garden bird and therefore becomes an ideal destination for the nature enthusiast in every kid. The campus extends to a children’s’ park and a snake park. The children’s park preserves a fossilized tree specimen which is found to be more than 20 million years old. The snake park, located next to the children’s park, is India’s first reptile park covering a wide variety of snakes like pythons, vipers, cobras.

The park is open for visitors from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM.

Birla Planetarium

The dreams of childhood are made of the cosmic world. Being regarded as one of the few modern planetaria in the nation, Birla Planetarium is located in The Periyar Science and Technology Campus.  This is that ideal place for edutainment that you want to provide for your children. Regular cosmic shows are held in the spherical shaped inner dome, composed of aluminum. There are shows both in Tamil and English on a wide variety of topics: The Sky and Seasons, Eclipses, Earth, Man on Moon, Comets, Shooting Meteoroids and Stellar Cycle. However shows on the Solar System is the one, found to be the kids’ most favorite. Also, the absence of city lights on the place makes it ideal for stargazing and observing heavenly bodies in the night.

Adyar Theosophical Society

If you want to escape the city noise and listen to the silence, Adyar Theosophical society is your destination. Extending over 250 acres, the campus has two parts: The main campus for visitors and the Besant Gardens for functions. This is a place of solitude surrounded by rich flora that let your soul to delight in the silence. There are worship places built inside the society for the people belonging to different faiths, who stay there. The society has a Hindu temple, a Christian church, a Sikh Shrine, a Mosque and even a Zoroastrian temple that makes the place really ‘theosophical’. The society also houses a 400-year-old uprooted banyan tree. The society has a library that shares with you the wisdom of Jiddu Krishnamurthy and other philosophers and writers. There is also a bookshop inside the campus that could interest the bibliophile in you.

The society is open for visitors from 8.00 AM to 10.00 AM in the morning and 2.00 PM to 4.00 PM in the evening on all days, except Sundays and public holidays. And the society does not charge you an entry fee for getting lost in the tranquility.

Since the society is close to Guindy National Park and Birla Planetarium, you can have a day out with the perfect blend of education, entertainment, fun, and peace, in one day.

Wild Tribe Ranch

Were you waiting for this summer to unleash to adventure enthusiast in your kid? The Farm

Ever wanted to take your kids back to your childhood days where you played in the rice fields, fed the cattle and took a nap under a giant tree? The Farm would be a dream come true for you to relive those days with your kids. The Farm is an organic farm having poultry, cattle and horses too. The visitors especially the kids are allowed to feed the cattle, take part in the milking process. Apart from farming, the kids can enjoy the fun activities like horse riding and the other outdoor and board games when you enjoy your evening walk around the lake. Apart from providing fun activities, you can get organically grown vegetables, grains, dairy products and other farm made food products here. Spending a weekend in The Farm, you are getting back the long-lost village life for you with an educational tour for your kids.
